HACK YOUR HERITAGE

There was a lot of good energy and excitement in the Aalto Media Factory when the first Hack Your Heritage Hackathon occupied the premises during the first weekend of February 2015. The event gathered together a diverse group of coders, designers, cultural heritage institutions, artists, graphic designers and others interested in open culture to create new concepts out of old materials during.

Nearly 50 people worked intensively in teams over a weekend developing new concepts and prototypes around digital archive materials that Finnish museums and archives had recently opened for public.

After the weekend the teams continued working on the projects for six weeks. The evolved concepts and partly functioning prototypes were presented in the National Archive on March 26.  In the Final Gala a jury of media professionals awarded several projects with honorable mentions and awards.

The winner of the hackathon “Kerttu’s Journey” is a narrative mobile app on a young woman in Finland in the 1930s.

You can see all the projects here.

The hackathon was organised by the local Finnish OpenGLAM-working group AvoinGLAM in collaboration with Aalto University.

ENMDA PROJECT BROUGHT
RUSSIAN GUESTS TO AALTO

In the Spring of 2015 Aalto Media Factory was once again happy to host guests from the Russian Universities participating in the ENMDA project.

Eleven guests, mainly teachers and professors from five universities, visited Aalto University for two weeks to participate in lectures and get familiar with the Finnish university teaching as well as techniques in learning in the field of digital art.

The ENMDA project provides the nine participating Russian and EU universities with the opportunity to organize a double degree EU-RU Master’s programme in digital art. It is funded by the EU Tempus programme.

3D PRINTING AT EMMA

Aalto Fablab brought 3D printing for everyone to see while visiting EMMA, Espoo Museum of Modern Art, during the Spring of 2015.

The FabLab staff Charlie Banthorpe and Ali Neissi took two different kinds of 3D printers with them and spent a few weekends during the spring term at the museum, telling about and most of all showing people 3D printing.

On the last occasion, on April 26, there was a camera with them to save and document  what was going on at the 3D printing station at thePop Art Design exhibition in the museum.

This is the first time I’m seeing the process of the printing!
I’ve never seen 3D printing before, only heard of it!

VISUALISATION COMPETITION
FOR STUDENTS

Students have been invited to come build digital Finland by participating in the visualisation competition  All About Me.

Aalto Media Factory has been happy to join forces with the Population Register Centre as well as Ministry of Finance for the project that is looking to find new, innovative ways to display data.

The winning project will be used in the marketing of the upcoming citizen’s service view, which is the new version of the Suomi.fi service, produced in the National Architecture for Digital Services.

The two-phase competition kicked off on April 1, 2015. From the submissions, a jury will select maximum of three agile proposals  which will be developed from ideas to an actual product.

The three works will then be taken to the public to try out and vote for their favourite to win.  The top three will each get 7 000 euros and the winner, chosen by the public, will receive an additional 8 000 euros.

You are invited to follow the on-going competition on Facebook as well as on the competition website.
